Best Time To Visit Leh Ladakh

The weather of Ladakh may be classified into three seasons, which are summer (April to June), monsoon (July to September), and winter (November to February) (January to March).

If you want to plan a vacation to Leh, the best time to go is between April and June. These are the best months to visit Leh when you can see pure ice lakes, brown mountains, and breathtaking valley vistas in their natural splendor. During this time, the temperature may be fairly warm, making it a good time for exploring.

How To Reach Leh Ladakh

1. By Flight:

When visiting Leh Ladakh in winter, the sole mode of transportation is via aircraft. However, planes travel there all year round. The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport in Leh serves as the major airport for the region’s travel needs. Air India and GoAir provide daily flights from Delhi to Ladakh. Air India also provides service between Leh and Jammu & Kashmir. During the winter months, aviation services are uncommon, and flights are often canceled owing to fog in Delhi and snowfall in Leh, among other factors.

Due to the fact that it is a military aviation port, the security checks and procedures are rigorous. Before entering the airport, it is recommended that you have a printed copy of your airline ticket.

Taxis are readily available to transport you from the airport to the town center. Those traveling by air are recommended to take at least one day off to enable their bodies to adjust to the high altitude of Leh Ladakh.

The nearest airport is Leh Airport (IXL), which is 44 kilometers away from Leh Ladakh.

2. By Road:

There are two road connections to Leh Ladakh: one through Manali, Himachal Pradesh, and another via Srinagar, Kashmir. To access Ladakh by road, you must first go to Manali or Srinagar by train or bus. Both routes are scenic and time-consuming, with twisting narrow roads and military checkpoints.

The Leh Manali Highway is 473 kilometers long and is the most often traveled route by visitors. This journey takes around two days and requires an overnight stay at either Keylong or Sarchu or Pang in tents. Many riders choose this road on their motorcycles, particularly Royal Enfields, due to the route’s uneven terrain. Additionally, several cyclists traverse this distance on their bicycles.

The road from Srinagar to Leh Ladakh is 434 kilometers long and is located at a lower elevation than the Leh Manali highway. This reduces the chance of developing severe high-altitude mountain sickness, albeit a less popular approach. The primary reason is that this region is home to multiple high-risk insurgent locations. This journey takes two days and includes an overnight stay in Kargil.

Jeep

The quickest method to reach Leh from Manali is in jeeps, most of which are shared. These jeeps complete the trek in one day rather than two days and one night. It does, however, carry a significant risk of severe altitude sickness. Shared jeep excursions cost around INR 1500 per person and depart from the Old Manali region.

3. By Train

Leh Ladakh is located in a remote area with few resources. As a result, the area lacks a railway station. However, the closest railway station is in Jammu Tawi (700 kilometers from Ladakh), which is well linked to Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai.

You may take a cab or a JKSRTC (Jammu Kashmir State Road Transport Corporation) bus to Leh from the Jammu Tawi station.
