Shyok River, Nubra to Pangong
As we get closer and closer to Ladakh, the verdant meadows, Chinar woods, and apple orchards that we passed before giving place to arid landscapes that are lighted by the sun. When you see monks walking around everywhere and monasteries dotting the countryside, you will realize that you have landed at one of the most beautiful places on Earth!!
A journey by car to Ladakh is not an easy undertaking; it is the stuff that dreams are made of. The soundlessness of Ladakh, together with its crystal blue sky, vivid rainbows, and shimmering lakes, are all indications of the region’s enchantment. This road trip boasts iconic landmarks such as the highest motorable road in the world (Khardung La), as well as some of the highest mountain passes in the world such as Zoji La and Tanglang La, as well as splendid scenic drives in remote regions, and some little known gems such as the kaleidoscopic More Plains, Lamayuru, and the hypnotic Gata Loops. It is in every way a journey on the open road unlike any other!
Pangong Lake
Even though Ladakh is home to a number of high-altitude lakes, none of them can compare to the beauty of Pangong Tso. As a result of the success of the film “3 Idiots,” it has become the most well-known tourist attraction in all of Ladakh.
Walking along the shores of the azure blue lake while being surrounded by mountains with brownish colours gives the impression that one is living in a postcard image. However, what makes it stand out from other lakes is the way the colours of the water shift as the day goes on. Prepare to pull out your cameras in order to record this unexplainable occurrence in real-time. While you camp near the lake, you may take in the sight of the night sky lit up by a gazillion stars.
At Pangong, there is always a sense of enchantment, regardless of the time of day or night.
Tso Moriri Lake
Pangong’s alter ego, Tso Moriri, is stunningly beautiful and has a blue complexion like its counterpart, Pangong. It is situated in an isolated area much to the north of Pangong Lake. Therefore, there are fewer visitors there, which is one of the reasons why it is so appealing. It is almost like looking at a real oil painting since, on one side, some mountains have a reddish hue and loom above it, while on the other side, there is beautiful green countryside. Migratory birds, including black-necked cranes, Brahmin ducks and geese, and seagulls, Brahmin ducks, and geese, are drawn to the lake, giving bird watchers another cause to celebrate. Black-necked cranes are very difficult to see.
Camping in the Korzok village, which is located close to the lake, will provide you with a more immersive experience.
Lamayuru
A picturesque hamlet is located midway between Kargil and Leh. Because the landscape of Lamayuru is so reminiscent of the moon, the locals refer to it as “Moonland.” Read on if the fact that it has that moniker on our list of the top 10 places to visit in Ladakh isn’t enough to convince you that it deserves to be there.
It is said in folklore that a lama by the name of “Naropa” traversed this country during a time when it was covered in water. After making his plea, the water began to subside, allowing him to create the monastery that would later become known as the renowned “Lamayuru Monastery.” It is widely considered one of the most stunning monasteries in all of Ladakh, and its interiors are adorned with murals and frescoes that are just breathtaking. The sculptures of Naropa and his students may be found in a cave right close to the prayer hall, making it one of the most interesting features of this shrine.
The monastery, which is perched on top of a hill, provides visitors with unrivalled views of the moonscapes that surround it. In the same way that the moon is “out of this world,” so too is the monastery.
